The Antigua Charter Yacht Show runs from December 4-10th. There will be 15 large sailing catamarans on display (from 50' on up)....this is one of the best places to see the most large sailing catamarans in the world in one place. I plan to be there and would be happy to help any of my clients to see as many catamarans as possible. It's advisable to make some showing appointments as some of these get fully booked up in advance. Contact Gary for show passes and boarding appointments for qualified buyers.

Record-breaking super catamaran SWIFT now for sale
If you’re looking to purchase a piece of sailing history, then check out this 32.8m catamaran Swift which is now for sale.
Swift was beautifully converted from the world’s fastest racing catamaran into an equally fast cruiser last year and still reaches speeds of over 30 knots under sail.
Designed by Gilles Ollier and built at the Multiplast yard in 2000, she has notched up numerous achievements and accolades including Innovation Explorer for the Around The World Race for G Class catamarans and the 2002 record for the Jules Verne Trophy as Orange. Ellen MacArthur sailed her asKingfisher 2 in 2003 and in 2006 she joined the record-breaking Gitana Team, racing under the name Gitana 13.
Swift’s record 43 days New York to San Francisco, 11 days San Francisco to Yokohama and 41 days Hong Kong to London still stand.
Jacky Setton bought her in 2010 to travel the South Pacific, and she underwent a six month refit at Lorient, transforming her into a cruising yacht with light and comfortable accommodation for up to 6 guests. Even so, special care was taken to keep the weight as close as possible to her ’round the world’ racing configuration with only 3 tons added in total.
Currently en route to the Caribbean, Swift is asking €2.95 million. For more information contact Gary Fretz.

August 2011 Yacht Market Commentary
My crystal ball is pretty clear today........Here is what I see going on....
- the cost of all commodities including petroleum products (necessary to ship components of new yachts to factories and used to make fiberglass resins) is going up because government is printing money like gangbusters and more dollars are chasing the same number of goods ... look for significant price increases for all new yachts...the manufacturers I represent keep reminding me to not quote prices until I get price-updates every month.....this price inflation may drag prices up for used yachts, especially for models that are still produced, because buyers will readily switch to a used yacht if there is the "right" price advantage and this drives prices for those models up....
- I see strong demand for any catamarans priced under $200,000 (lots of liveaboard buyers looking and it's relatively affordable at these levels) and yachts in the $3,000,000-$50,000,000 price range (the older guys in this league still have plenty of cash and have limited time to enjoy it, so "might as well have some fun before they kick the bucket") ....
- right now, most of the buying for yachts in the $100,000-$3,000,000 range, is coming out of Australia and Scandinavia because of foreign-exchange considerations and their economies are doing fairly well ...the yacht delivery companies are swamped with inquiries from these countries! .....Also we see buying from Switzerland and Singapore. My personal opinion about why we see this, is that Singapore is "the new Switzerland" (one of the only places where bank secrecy is still intact and all the wealth of Asia is migrating there...the actual buyers are Middle Eastern, Russian, Indian, Chinese and traders/bankers working in Singapore). In the case of Switzerland, they just manage their economy better than everyone else (not involved in expensive foreign wars and their currency is semi-backed by gold) so their economy is humming away and people working there have lots of money to spend.
- There are a significant number of buyers who feel that the stock market, bond markets and real estate stink so bad that hard-assets that aren't taxed (like offshore-registered yachts) and "bought right" make sense, and so we are seeing a tremendous change in that 90% of all yachts are now bought with all cash...whereas before 2008, 70% of all yachts were financed...the yacht-loan brokers are all going out of business because of this.....
- bank repos are up but (surprising to me) mainly just for motorboats 18'-36'...otherwise the repo numbers are the same as we've seen for 2 years. All the repos are being sold quickly to Russian buyers. Some Russians told me that "You guys in the West have had boats and fun for many years and now it's our turn!" ... 5,000,000 Russians/year now fly into Nice, France to go boating and to the beach there. I see some crazy things with these Russians and the way they are spending money (like there's no tomorrow).
I hope this helps give you a better picture of what's going on.... I graduated from Tulane with a degree in Economics which hasn't helped me much, except when I get to write a market commentary like this...so it makes me feel like those 4 years weren't a total waste of time...
